5-week Virtual Workshop

Leading and Influencing as an Introvert

How does an introvert lead? Introverts don’t fit the stereotypical leadership model in management literature. They’re often unaware of their introvert strengths and how to maximize them in the workplace, much less become leaders. However, Cain, Laney, Kahnweiler, and others have increased our understanding of introversion and how it impacts leadership styles.

This course will explore the recent literature on introversion and the workplace, tools and techniques for discovering introvert strengths, and strategies for leveraging them. Students will identify success factors for introverts in leadership roles and will develop action plans for individual development.

The course combines 5 weeks of readings and other resources, online discussions, and short reflection papers with a virtual workshop on improving verbal communication skills through improvisational exercises. (5-week course; one-hour session each week)

Improv’ing Workplace Communication

Ben Woelk and Megan Mack have developed an innovative method that combines comedy improvisation and leadership training to help individuals and teams boost their confidence, communication skills, and brainstorming abilities. People in technically-oriented roles are well equipped to engage intellectually, but may struggle with communicating with feeling or intuitively.

The facilitators will share the foundational concepts of improvisation and discuss how they will improve workplace communication. Participants will engage in facilitated improv exercises designed to help us communicate from the head, the heart, and the gut. Join us as we practice improv techniques that will help us read body language, stop over-thinking, and communicate effectively face to face by connecting with the other person.

The foundation of improvisation is the phrase, “yes, and.” Teams that operate from a place of agreement are more productive, more creative, and have more trust in each other. There are no mistakes in improv; every idea is a “gift.” These guidelines create a safe and inviting space where teams can communicate without the fear of judgment or failure. Plus, everyone laughing and having fun is great for team building and bonding.

This is a 2-hour virtual course.

Half Day Workshop

Introverts and Leadership Workshop

Western society lauds extroverted leaders and their accomplishments. However, introverts make great contributions and can be effective leaders too. Those of us who are introverts may not believe or recognize that we have strong leadership skills, and we certainly don’t seem like the extroverted leaders that are the norm in Western society.

Join us as we help you identify your strengths and discuss how you can apply these introvert strengths to leadership. You’ll participate in an improvisation workshop to enhance your communication skills. We’ll work with you to create individualized strategies for leadership development.

Options include a half-day and a full-day workshop.

Using Temperament Assessment to Lead

Temperament types have big impacts on work relationships. Today’s workplace presents challenges for both introverted and extroverted team members. Many workplaces are adopting open space layouts that foster teamwork but provide little opportunities for introverts to contribute as individuals. Extroverts may struggle with working with Introverts. Because of Western society’s emphasis on extroversion, many introverts feel unsuited or ill-equipped to thrive in today’s workplace and are not sure how to take that next step to increase influence and improve visibility. All personality types may have issues working with coworkers or management. Is your manager a Guardian, an Idealist, a Rational, or an Artisan? How does that change how you approach them? Suitable for all attendees, you’ll benefit from understanding your temperament and how you interact best with others.

This is a half-day workshop.
